Fuel prices have risen sharply in recent months, and the international situation is causing further market instability and concerns about future supply. Biomass heating, particularly using wood pellets, offers a cost-effective and sustainable alternative.
Pellet stoves and boilers are modern heating systems with features like timed operation, high fuel capacity, and adjustable power levels. They can significantly reduce heating costs, often by 50% or more, compared to traditional fuels. Pellets are also more economical than LPG and diesel. For example, while one kilogram of LPG might cost around Rs. 100, the equivalent heat output can be achieved with two to two and a half kilograms of pellets, costing only Rs. 40-50. This cost advantage is driving increased pellet use in India, although wider awareness of these benefits is still needed.
Using firewood and pellets is both financially and environmentally responsible.
Here are some advantages of biomass pellet fuel:
- High Heat Value: Pellets have a heat value of 3900-4800 Kcal/kg, which increases to 7000-8000 Kcal/kg after carbonization.
- Consistent Heat: The high consistent heat in the processed wood pellets improves the taste of cooking and reduces absorption of oil in fried food items increasing the shelf life.
- High Purity: Pellets have low impurity levels, high carbon content (75-85%), low ash content (3-6%), and low moisture (1-3%). They are free of heat-consuming coal gangues.
- Reduced Corrosion: The absence of sulfur and phosphorus in pellets prevents corrosion in boilers, extending their lifespan and reducing costs.
- Low Emissions: Without sulfur and phosphorus, pellet combustion produces minimal SO2 and P5O2, reducing air pollution.
- Easy Handling: The small, uniform size of pellets allows for automated feeding into boilers, reducing labor costs and improving the working environment.
- Minimal Ash Residue: The small amount of ash produced requires less space for storage and reduces disposal costs.
- Usable Ash: The ash residue is a high-quality organic potassium fertilizer that can be recycled and sold.
- Government Support: Many regions offer policies and subsidies to encourage the use of biomass energy.
Furthermore, pellet burners have become more affordable, efficient, and sophisticated, making them an attractive option for various industries, from small businesses to large manufacturing plants. The combination of cost savings, improved burner efficiency, and advanced automation is fueling the growing adoption of pellets throughout the country.
